🌎 How to fly on the cheap with only a personal item

This issue of our newsletter brought to you by REI Co-op

Hello Reader,

🧭 Where We're At

We headed for the hills after celebrating a niece's wedding in Denver over the weekend. Denver was hot, in the 90s, but now we're relaxing in Keystone where the air is fresh and lovely. With our 2 1/2-year-old granddaughter (and her parents,) we'll cruise up a gondola today in the Breckenridge ski area to take in the views and take a little hike.

We were lucky to fit in a quick visit with our friend Sherry Ott while we were in Denver. Sherry is the creator of one of our favorite travel blogs, OttsWorld. Sherry was just setting off for the next leg of her state capital to capital bike ride, a project inspired by her father. She's currently riding Sante Fe to Denver – yup over the Rocky Mountains – and you can follow along with her stories on Facebook.

🗞️ Travel News From Around the Web

  • Not really earth shattering news, but Delta has switched to a number based boarding system. If you want to be in boarding group 1, buy a First Class ticket. Otherwise, we'll see you in Group 4.
  • This expert on air travel is grounding his airline status. Status on Delta just isn't worth it anymore, he says. And, as long-time Delta flyers ourselves, we're also rethinking our annual struggle to maintain our preferred status . We've been Delta Platinum for more than 10 years, but with recent changes to Delta's status earning scheme, it's more difficult to get status, and the upgrade possibilities have declined as well.
  • Here are 13 "Hidden Gem" travel destinations, according to Travel and Leisure magazine. We've been to six of them, and can highly recommend Poland (a lot of beautiful churches that somehow were not destroyed in WWII) and Khajuraho, India. Warning, our Khajuraho post is NSFW.

We don't do it often, but when we're going for a short trip and are willing to give up a few of our hard-earned airline perks, we do fly on the discount carriers, or on a basic economy fare on one of the big guys. The key to doing that as economically as possible is taking only a personal item on the plane. That is, only a small bag that fits under the seat in front of you – and incurs no baggage fees. Here's our guide to Flying with Only a Personal Item – Our Ultimate Minimalist Packing Tips. We hope you'll find it useful.

💸 This Week's Best Deals in Travel

If you can wait until Friday, August 23, to get your gear, that's when REI's annual Labor Sale starts. A lot of great deals, as always.

✈️ Points and Miles News

Frankly, we're still surprised these two great credit card offers are still on. These deals tend to expire without warning, so take advantage now, while you can.

Our favorite by far is this card (which we carry.) It is currently offering a huge 120,000 point welcome offer that is worth a minimum of $1500 when redeemed through their portal. These points can be worth even more if you transfer points to the card's many airline or hotel partners. In fact, you could get as many as 35 free nights at Hyatt Hotels, if you take the best offer. All in all, a spectacular deal for a $95 annual fee.

Another is this card. To start, you get a $250 travel credit valid during the first year of card membership. Plus, you get 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months after account opening. This welcome offer alone is worth up to $1,080 when you combine the value of the travel credit, the bonus miles, and the miles you earn on the minimum spend. And, this card also has a low $95 annual fee. Check our full review here.

Just in case you're wondering why we don't name the cards in this email...banking regulations.

Hello Reader, 🧭 Where in the World? We rejoined the world of travel last week, and we weren’t alone. Airports are busy and rental cars are scarce, so plan ahead and allow extra time door to door. The reward was a wonderful time in Western Washington visiting family, digging up clams, walking in the woods, and jumping into the refreshing cold swimming hole in the Whatcom Falls Park in Bellingham. Glad to see so many others out enjoying nature, our country’s best medicine. 🛫 Get Going: Travel...

Hello Reader, 🧭 Where in the World? What’s up? It seems the world is coming to us, between visiting family and friends, keeping an eye on the news, and, best of all, planning travel and staying in touch with international colleagues. It’s not so much where we are today, but where we’re going…. Just the sort of street that interests us: Montpellier, France. 🛫 Get Going: Travel With Us Art & Art de Vivre, Montpellier, France. We are thrilled to be working with a new and unique company, Elective...

Hello Reader, 🧭 Where in the World? It’s summer and I have an outsized desire to talk about the weather. We’re based in the North Country for the summer, traveling a bit in Minnesota and a couple other U.S. destinations. This time of year, we’re looking for every opportunity to visit friends, relax lakeside, and even work or read outside on a shady deck or screened porch. Summer is fleeting, so we remind ourselves: carpe diem! Book now for the last spot on our Ireland tour. And, have one on...
