Hello Reader, 🧭 Where in the World?Now that the Minnesota State Fair is over and Labor Day has passed, the rest of the year seems entirely too short. That’s why a lot of people – in the Midwest, at least – are squeezing in little road trips. It’s a great time to take in the scenery and make visits to places you missed over the summer. Fall color maps are available now. (It's not just the Midwest – New England is in here, too.) And, for those who didn’t get enough of the farm vibe at the whatever State Fair you might have visited, you can find apple- or pumpkin-picking destinations, or even “Sleep with the Cows” at a farm near you, like this Guest Barn in Iowa. Fun for all ages, wink. We’re taking the change-of-seasons cue to figure out how we might use our ‘free’ companion ticket we earned with Delta. 📖 What We're ReadingKris couldn’t put down the new release, American Scoundrel, by Kai Bird with Susan Goldmark, which she grabbed from Tom before he could read it. Though it’s subtitled, “Roy Cohn’s Dark Journey from Joe McCarthy to Donald Trump,” its substance goes beyond mere biography to a portrait of our cyclical American psyche from the 20th Century to today – what we believe, what we fear, and what we let others get away with. (Kai and Susan were college classmates of Tom’s and mine.) Tom, after putting up a losing fight over American Scoundrel, pivoted to a book he'd been meaning to read for a long time, 2666, by Roberto Bolaño. It's a great follow up to One Hundred Years of Solitude, which he just finished. Like One Hundred Years, 2666 is a bit of a mystical journey. It features an ever multiplying bunch of characters in search of an elusive German novelist in Mexico – who may or may not be a serial killer as well as being on the short list for a Nobel Prize. 2666 made the top 10 list of the New York Times best books of the 21st Century. Hello Reader, Somewhere in Ecuador, 2010. 🧭 Where in the World? We were just reminded this week by a Facebook prompt that it’s been 16 years since we picked up and moved to Quito, Ecuador. That was the first step, and it was also the longest we’ve stayed in one place since: nine months. I can’t say we had a plan in mind beyond that first stop, which might explain why we’ve rarely, if ever, been disappointed by our travels. (Unhappy? Move on.) The highlights? Our compass leads us to new places...

Hello Reader, 🧭 Where in the World? A couple weeks have rushed by since we last wrote. While we’ve been at home, it feels like we’re traveling. This must be what they mean by ‘staycation’, one of our favorite portmanteaus. Hosting out-of-town friends and family, we're seeing lots of what makes the Twin Cities and Minnesota great: art fairs, outdoor concerts, museums, theater, parks, bike trails, swimming holes, and great restaurants across town and state.
